Digitization and Reconstruction of Archaeological Artifacts

چکیده
We describe an ongoing research project on efficient methods for reconstruction of objects from large collections of irregular fragments, such as ancient pottery, collapsed murals, etc.. Our solution for flat objects uses multiscale matching and constrained dynamic programming, and we are now extending it to curved pottery fragments. We seek collaborative projects with museums and other potential users. 1. The fragment reassembly problem. Our project aims at developing efficient algorithms that can find adjoining pieces in a large collection of irregular fragments, by comparing their shapes. Besides archaeology, we expect these algorithms will be useful in art restoration, failure analysis, and other areas. For flat objects, the data typically consists of 10–10 irregular fragment outlines, each defined by 10 sample points. The goal is to find any pairs of curves that have long sections with similar shapes — as similar as expected from adjacent fragments of the same object:

Towards Automated 3D Reconstruction of Defective Cultural Heritage Objects
Due to recent improvements in 3D acquisition and shape processing technology, the digitization of Cultural Heritage (CH) artifacts is gaining increased application in context of archival and archaeological research. This increasing availability of acquisition technologies also implies a need for intelligent processing methods that can cope with imperfect object scans. Specifically for Cultural ...
متن کاملGrid services for e-archaeology
Archaeological data collection is based on the description of archaeological contexts. An archaeological excavation demolishes the original matrix within which the cultural material is found and special care is taken to record spatial context. Each artifact is described in terms of its physical and spatial properties as well as its relation to the matrix (for example soil composition). As sever...
متن کاملAssessment of simulated patient motion and its effect on myocardial perfusion SPECT using two reconstruction methods (Filtered Backprojection;FBP and Iterative method) [Persian]
Introduction: Motion of the patient during myocardial perfusion SPECT could potentially results in false perfusion defects. The effect of different reconstruction methods on these artifacts is not studied. Clarification of the relation between the extent, severity and duration of motion with the resultant artifacts may be helpful in designing special soft wares for motion correction. This...
متن کاملVirtual archaeologist: assembling the past - Computer Graphics and Applications, IEEE
IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications 53 Reconstruction of archaeological monuments from fragments found at archaeological sites is a tedious task requiring many hours of work from archaeologists and restoration personnel. For large constructions, such as the Parthenon at the Acropolis of Athens, the restoration process takes longer due to the mass of fragments. To test large building blocks ...
متن کاملEdge Artifacts in Point Spread Function-based PET Reconstruction in Relation to Object Size and Reconstruction Parameters
Objective(s): We evaluated edge artifacts in relation to phantom diameter and reconstruction parameters in point spread function (PSF)-based positron emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction. Methods: PET data were acquired from an original cone-shaped phantom filled with 18F solution (21.9 kBq/mL) for 10 min using a Biograph mCT scanner. The images were reconstructed using the baseline or...
متن کاملAutomated Image-based Procedures for Accurate Artifacts 3d Modeling and Orthoimage Generation
The accurate 3D documentation of architectures and heritages is getting very common and required in different application contexts. The potentialities of the image-based approach are nowadays very well-known but there is a lack of reliable, precise and flexible solutions, possibly open-source, which could be used for metric and accurate documentation or digital conservation and not only for sim...
